The wet and miserable weather at Grangemouth Stadium did not dampen the team spirit of the Kirkintilloch Olympians at match 1 of the 2013 Central & South Scotland Athletics League on Sunday 12th May. This league is unique in that it sees all age categories within the club competing as part of the same team and contributing to overall score on the day, therefore it is vital to have athletes competing across all the events & categories.

The first match of the 2013 Youth Development League saw the partnership of Kirkintilloch Olympians & Garscube Harriers within the East Dunbartonshire composite team get off to a flying start. There was a nervousness in the air leading up to this new venture as is frequently the case when venturing into the unknown, but as both clubs gathered in advance of the event at Wishaw new friendships were being made and the apprehension quickly disappeared.

Perri McCluskey and Anna Forbes attended a three day high jump course at the emirates this week with international high jumper David Smith. It was very educational and worthwhile course to take part in. There was only seven of us on the course so it was pretty full on and very tiring. We were told on the first day that Kate Middleton and Prince William would be visiting the emirates on the last day. We never thought for a second we would get to meet them.

Thanks to the club, a large group of young athletes got the opportunity to go to the Aviva Championships at the Emirates Arena on the 26th of January 2013. All the kids and coaches got a bus to the Arena, leaving Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre at 10.30am. It was a very inspiring day. Athletes such as Dai Greene, Dwain Chambers, Robbie Grabarz, Perri Shakes-Drayton, Eilidh Child and paralympic athlete Stefanie Reid were there.

Perri McCluskey received a late Christmas present this year. On Boxing Day the invitation below was received by our Under 15 athlete, just rewards for her efforts in training and competing for the club. From the age of 9 Perri has regularly competed in all disciplines for Kirkintilloch Olympians. A well deserved District vest for a dedicated athlete.

Kirkintilloch Olympians were well represented at all age groups in the Dunbartonshire XC Championships at a muddy Maryhill Park. First off were the U11’s and first back was Dylan Elliott in 3rd place. In the same race, the U11 girls’ team put in a strong performance, with Hannah Paton, Niamh Summers and Marnie Bloomfield combining to take 3rd team prize.

Just as the usual warm up and drills for the juniors were underway in the hall at Kirkintilloch High School on Thursday 8th November, the session was interrupted by the adult membership invading the hall, shortly followed by Ali Lamond promptly rounding up the juniors and organising them in an orderly fashion, much to the annoyance of Ada Stewart, who looked bewildered as to what was going on.
Little did she know that she was about to become the center of attention in what was about to unfold.

Kirkintilloch Olympian course setters, photographers, supporters and 34 athletes (13 younger and 21 senior) participated in the National Cross Country Relay championships at Cumbernauld on Saturday 27th October. The course setters marked the difficult “undulating” route, the photographers maintained their high standard of catching the fine looking competitors at their worst, the supporters are now officially the noisiest in Scotland and last but not least there were some slips and falls but no submissions from the athletes.
