14 year old Kirkintilloch Olympian Scott Lawrie led the group of runners from the East Dunbartonshire club who took part in the Linlithgow 10k and fun run last Sunday. Whilst the seniors took part over the longer distances, Scott showed how to run at speed over shorter distances winning the fun run. Having been placed fifth last year, Scott was determined to improve in the better running conditions around the West Lothian town and along the side of Linlithgow loch which made up the c1.5k route. In an impressive performance amongst a field of runners aged between 8 and 15, Scott showed how much he had improved over the past two years, to lift the first prize and gain the cheers of the many people who had congregated at the finish line under the shadow of Linlithgow Palace.
The seniors were unable to match this competitiveness, with Robert Rogerson being Kirkintilloch’s highest finisher in 15th place and third in the vet category. With the first few kilometres into the wind, and with some testing climbs around the course, Robert was happy with his time of 36mins – although it was nearly 40secs slower than last year in the rain!. Ada Stewart was the club’s first female finisher in 45mins, ahead of Shirley MacNab (49mins), Pamela Parker and Maggie Hendry (both 50mins). Gordon McDonald crossed the line between them, happy to complete the course in 45mins – all the more impressive given that Gordon had run the Karlsruhr Marathon last weekend. In this race, he had finished in 4hr 19mins, despite the unseasonally warm conditions.
That marathon was the first of a set of autumn marathons being raced by many in the club. With both Pamela Parker and Maggie Hendry being part of the a group heading to Berlin next weekend, their 10k times of 50mins at Linlithgow showed that they were in good form to tackle the 26.2 miles.
